Welcome to the April edition of bta first’s newsletter

The world’s first traffic light

…was put into operation in 1868 - a full 18 years before the introduction of the first automobile. The traffic light stood in London in front of the Houses of Parliament and was intended to help pedestrians - especially members of parliament - cross the street. It was operated by a police officer, and at night it was illuminated by a gas lamp. This ultimately led to it exploding less than a month after it was put into service. The gas line had a leak, and the police officer operating it was injured in the accident.

Book Recommendation: "A Sense of the World: How a Blind Man Became History’s Greatest Traveler"

Buchempfehlung Jason Roberts

Jason Roberts tells the fascinating true story of James Holman, who - despite complete blindness - became one of the greatest world travelers of his time in the 19th century.
Through meticulous research, the author vividly brings Holman’s adventurous journeys to life, from Africa to Australia. The book is more than just a biography - it is a remarkable tribute to courage, curiosity, and human resilience.
Roberts writes with both suspense and empathy about a man who rediscovered the world through his other senses. An inspiring work that shows true wanderlust knows no physical limits.
